Lenovo LaVie Z Laptop Review

Lenovo LaVie Z Laptop Review

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist of the Lenovo Laptop Battery

Everyone is looking for something specific when they’re shopping for a new laptop with battery like Lenovo 01AV428 Battery, Lenovo SB10K97597 Battery, Lenovo Thinkpad T570 Battery, Lenovo Thinkpad P51S Battery, Lenovo 0C52861 Battery, Lenovo 0C52862 Battery, Lenovo 45N1160 Battery, Lenovo 45N1777 Battery, Lenovo 45N1761 Battery, Lenovo 45N1130 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X270 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad W550S Battery. Some want the bare essentials of a netbook and others want a gaming laptop to play the latest titles. For most people, however, portability is king. Of course, in order to shave off as much extra weight as possible, manufacturers often have to resort to less powerful components that are more space efficient—like Intel's Core M processors. But thankfully, that doesn't always have to be the case.

Lenovo has gone the extra mile and developed a laptop that weighs a ridiculous 1.87 pounds, without skimping on the hardware. The LaVie Z (MSRP: $1,199.99) features a fifth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, an Intel HD Graphics 5500 GPU, and a whopping 256GB SSD for storage. That’s plenty to handle all of your daily tasks as well as those that require a little more power, like photo or video editing.

I know what you’re thinking: it sounds too good to be true. And in a way, you might be right. While the LaVie Z is impressive, there are a few flaws that hold it back. Namely, an unusual keyboard layout that can be a little hard to get used to and a hollow-feeling chassis that doesn’t inspire much confidence. That being said, if you're just looking for an ultra-light machine that doesn't skimp on power, you don't have to look much farther than this.

While there aren’t any configuration options for the LaVie Z, there is the option to spend a little extra for the LaVie Z 360. While it looks exactly the same as the LaVie Z—including the strange keyboard and hollow-feeling chassis—it features a beautiful touchscreen and a reversible hinge that you can use to transform it into a tablet and back again.

If the Lenovos are too quirky for your tastes, the Dell XPS 13 (2015) (MSRP: $799.99, $1,149.99 for a comparable model) is the best alternative. With the XPS 13, Dell developed a practically non-existent bezel around the screen that fits a 13-inch display into a case that’s normally reserved for 11-inch notebooks. With plenty of options for customization and a low starting price, it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see why we like it as much as we do.

Maybe you don’t need as much power as the LaVie Z or the XPS 13, though. In fact, you can save quite a bit of money by going for something like the Asus ZenBook UX305 (MSRP: $699.99). Another lightweight ultraportable, the UX305 is perfectly suited for anyone on a tighter budget that only needs to do basic computing tasks and nothing too intensive. This ultimately comes down to the use of the slightly weaker Core M processor and GPU.

No matter how you look at them, the LaVie Z and LaVie Z 360 are mighty tempting offers for anyone that travels frequently with a laptop. Not only are they insanely lightweight, but there’s enough power to handle almost anything you might want to throw at them. Of course, the side-effect of that is a hollow-feeling frame that isn’t very reassuring if you want it to last for a long time. It might cost a little more to go with a more typical ultrabook, but there’s something to be said for a laptop that just feels solid in your hands.

Lenovo ThinkPad X270 Review

Lenovo ThinkPad X270 Review

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist of the Lenovo Laptop Battery

The X270 series comes in a wide variety of configurations, and only some of them are worth the money. The entry-level model with battery such as Lenovo 0A36305 Battery, Lenovo 45N1018 Battery, Lenovo 45N1019 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X220i Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X230i Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X230s Battery, Lenovo 01AV422 Battery, Lenovo 01AV425 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad T560 Battery, Lenovo 01AV427 Battery starts at $881.10 and comes with an Intel Core i5-7200U, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Disk Drive, and a 12.5-inch (1366 x 768) display. That's not great: you can get the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a 13.3-inch 1080p touchscreen for only $760.

If you're looking for a better processor or additional RAM, it's easy to customize your machine on the Lenovo website. But not all those upgrades are worth the money. Our test unit was customized as high as it will go, and would cost $2,028.60. Here are the specs for the version we reviewed:

•Intel Core i7-7600U
•16 GB RAM
•476GB SSD
•12.5-inch HD (1920 x 1080) matte display, non-touch
•USB-type C (supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 speeds)
•Full-sized USB 3.0 (x2)
•HDMI
•Ethernet
•Hot-swap battery system

The one we tested is a powerful machine and has phenomenal battery life, which is a rare combination. But I would opt for this configuration: Intel Core i5-7500U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1080p display, and 72 watt-hour rear battery for $1,416.60.

All the models come with a 3-cell 23Wh internal battery. By default, the rear battery is also a 3-cell 23Wh unit. It only costs $5 to upgrade the rear battery to a 6-cell 42Wh unit, and $25 to get a bulkier 6-cell 72Wh rear battery. Either way, the battery upgrade is totally worth it, no matter what customization you decide to go with.

Most laptops have a single battery. They're usually located at the rear of the device and they may or may not be easily removable. Either way, even if you have a removable battery, swapping out for a freshly charged backup means shutting the whole system down. The X270 is unique because it comes with two batteries and you can "hot-swap" by removing the rear battery without turning the computer off.

The internal 3-cell battery, located at the front under the keyboard, keeps the computer running while you're swapping out the removable battery at the back. If your battery life is getting low, if you have a charged up battery in your bag, you can slide it into the rear of the machine like a jigsaw piece.

If you're looking for a portable powerhouse that will last you well into the night, then you can't get much better than this. This ThinkPad is one of the most travel-friendly machines out there. The hot-swap battery system, unique to the ThinkPad line, will sustain the machine for as long as you can keep the back-up batteries charged. It's also lightweight enough to slip in a bag, durable enough to survive a few bumps and bruises, and can be outfitted with an LTE modem for on the go Internet.

The top-end models are priced fairly, but the design doesn't make it feel like a premium machine. If you're going to go for a high-end laptop, I'd opt for a MacBook Pro, the Dell XPS 13, or even the Lenovo X1 Carbon. They're similarly powerful and have good battery life, even if they can't match the X270 with its unique hot-swapping battery system.

Speaking of the hot-swapping battery system, the default option on all Lenovo X270—even the $1,600+ models—is a 3-cell 23.2Wh rear battery, but you can upgrade to a 42Wh rear battery for $5 or a 72Wh rear battery for $25 and you should absolutely do that, otherwise you'll likely get mediocre battery life.

The sweet spot really lies somewhere in the middle. The $1,300 to $1,500 range is when you're getting the both of best worlds. The $1,300 to $1,500 range is where you'll find the best of both worlds, including a fast processor, plenty of storage, and unparalleled battery life. The X270 can't do anything about the guy in front of you reclining into your space the whole flight or the unruly child that's kicking the back of your seat, but at least you never have to worry about running out of juice.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y50 review

Lenovo IdeaPad Y50 review

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist of the Lenovo Laptop Battery

Lenovo’s Y50 with battery such as Lenovo 51J0226 Battery, Lenovo 57Y6266 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3448 Battery, Lenovo 45N1070 Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T4585 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3444 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3460 Battery, Lenovo L08L6Y02 Battery, Lenovo 3000 G555 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad B460 Battery, Lenovo 45N1071 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3462 Battery, like most gaming laptops, features a 15.6-inch display. This of course means that the system is large relative to a 13-inch Ultrabook, but the Y50’s 24mm profile is among the thinnest in the segment. Only the Razer Blade provides comparable power in a smaller frame.

Size is the only trait that might make the Y50 stand out, however. In all other respects, it is a typical desktop replacement, and some observers might guess it to be priced lower than where it actually is. A black metal display lid is the system’s only touch of class. Red accents along the keyboard and speakers attempt to add spice, but the dark shade of maroon used here simply blends into the surrounding black plastic.

In short, the Y50 looks a bit boring, but it’s at least well built. Panel gaps are tight, and the chassis doesn’t allow much flex, despite its slim size. The lack of an optical drive, and the system’s light weight, no doubt help contribute to its solid feel.

We hoped the Y50’s portable dimensions and modest 5.3 pounds of heft were indications that it could serve as a road warrior. Alas, that’s far from true. The Peacekeeper Web browsing benchmark drained a full charge in just three hours and three minutes, which puts the Y50’s endurance an hour behind the MSI GT60 Dominator Pro, and 50 minutes south of the Clevo P157SM.

Power draw is part of the problem. We measured up to 31 watts of consumption at idle, which is higher than the Clevo P157SM’s 28 watts. At full load, the Lenovo takes the lead, drawing only 87 watts to the Clevo’s 157 watts, but any benefit this might have provided is marginalized by the Y50’s smaller battery.

Lenovo’s Y50 is affordable and reasonably quick, but it does more to damage the company’s gaming reputation than to enhance it. The system’s unforgivable flaw is the display, which would be disappointing on a system sold at half the price. A low-contrast panel with poor viewing angles has no business being part of a gaming laptop. Lenovo’s optional Ultra HD panel might be better, but it will cause another problem; the Y50’s GTX 860M graphics chip isn’t quick enough to handle games beyond 1080p.

There are other issues, as well. The touchpad is finicky, the keyboard is frustrating, and the battery gives out far too quickly. Ultimately, though, these are just nitpicks compared to the display, which disqualifies the Y50 from a recommendation by itself.

And that’s a shame, because the hardware inside is solid. The Y50 achieved at least 30 FPS at maximum detail in the three games we tested, which is no small feat for a gaming laptop that costs barely more than $1,000. This notebook could be a reasonable choice for gamers on a tight budget who are willing to make sacrifices at the altar of framerate, but it’s not the well-rounded, portable powerhouse it could have been.

Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 320

Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 320

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist of the Lenovo Laptop Battery

Measuring just 0.4 by 9.8 by 7 inches with keyboard attached and weighing 2.2 pounds (1.2 of them being the tablet itself), the Miix 320 with battery like Lenovo 45N1049 Battery, Lenovo L1036F01 Battery, Lenovo L11L6F01 Battery, Lenovo L11L6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11N6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11S6F01 Battery, Lenovo L11S6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11M6Y01 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad G580 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 Battery is small and lightweight. It's not as light as some of its competition, though: The Acer Switch 3 weighs 1.98 pounds, and the Asus Transformer Mini is a feathery 1.75 pounds with its keyboard cover. Its sleek matte-silver frame feels reasonably sturdy, and you could easily think the it was solely a laptop until you explored it for a while.

Measuring just 0.4 by 9.8 by 7 inches with keyboard attached and weighing 2.2 pounds (1.2 of them being the tablet itself), the Miix 320 is small and lightweight.

The 320 runs Windows 10 Home. Under the hood on our review unit, there's a 1.44GHz Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, integrated Intel HD Graphics, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of eMMC flash storage on board. (The $199 base model has half the storage and memory.) The left and right side of the keyboard each have a USB 2.0 port. On the left side (when attached to the keyboard) of the tablet are the power socket, an on-off button, and a volume-control rocker. Although you can also control the volume from the microphone icon in your tray or from the keyboard when it's attached, the physical volume control is a nice convenience, particularly when you're using the 320 in tablet mode.

As expected for low-priced detachable hybrids, 3D gaming isn't a strong suit. When I tested it on both Heaven and Valley at medium detail settings and 1,366-by-768 resolution, it turned in rates of a mere 4 and 5 frames per second (fps), respectively, while we consider 30fps the threshold for smooth gameplay. At 1,920 by 1,080 with high detail enabled, it limped in at 2 and 3fps, respectively. In fairness, though, the other budget detachable hybrids turn in equally dismal scores.

We expect a long battery life from detachable hybrids, and we weren't disappointed with the 320, which played our test video for 13 hours, 25 minutes before shutting down. Although it falls short of the Lenovo Miix 310, which turned in a phenomenal 16:26, and the Asus T102HA, which we timed at 14:14, it's outmatched in the category, substantially outlasting the HP Pavilion x2's 10:39.

Detachable hybrids are the Transformers of the computer world, at home as either a tablet or a laptop, as needed. For high-end detachable hybrids such as the Microsoft Surface Book (Best Price at Amazon), performance is king and price is no object. Budget detachables are at the other end of the spectrum, where low price and good user experience are paramount, and a slightly better feature set can make a big difference.

During testing, my experience with the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 320 was smooth and enjoyable, despite its small keyboard. A sturdy feel and good magnetic connection between keyboard and tablet add to its appeal. It is substantially improved from last year's Miix 310, with more memory and storage, plus the addition of a USB-C port. That also sets it apart from our previous top pick, the Asus T102HA, which is nearly $100 more expensive and adds a stylus and keyboard cover to the mix, but lacks the 320's USB-C port. USB-C allows you to connect, through an adapter, with multiple sources at once including HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, USB 2.0 and 3.0, and even Ethernet. That along with its lower price are enough to make the Miix 320 our new Editors' Choice budget detachable hybrid tablets.
